Reduce carbon intensity

In 2018, the IMO’s (International Maritime Organization) Greenhouse Gas Strategy towards 2050 was approved – the goal of which is to reduce carbon intensity of shipping by 40% (compared to 2008) within the next decade up to 2030, and by 50% in total up to 2050.

 

Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI)

The measures being introduced by the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) to help meet these goals include a combination of technical and operational measures. One of the technical measures is the introduction of the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI), the requirements of which come into effect on 1^st January 2023. In order to meet these requirements, more energy efficient technologies such as LED lighting will play a key role in helping ships to reduce their power consumption and carbon footprint. Convert to LED

Under the latest European Union ECO Directive (RoHS Directive), after 2023, depending on the specific application, it will be illegal to sell T8 linear fluorescent lamps within the EU. Many similar directives are also being implemented around the world. This means you need to act now and start planning to convert to LED as soon as possible – otherwise you could face difficulties sourcing spare parts and components for discontinued T8 fluorescent lamps.

Glamox recommends upgrading fluorescent luminaries by changing the gear trays with new LED-kits. Glamox LED-kits are specifically designed to meet all marine and offshore rules, including EX. They have superior lifetimes over traditional LED-tubes and have been tested for EMC A & B, vibration, shock and Ta45°.

Most LED-tubes on the market are not marine approved and are strictly prohibited in EX-luminaries. Installing LED-tubes is often time consuming since it usually requires installation of new lamp holders and the need of bypassing the original ballast. MIR LED-Kits require no tools and can be installed in under 2 minutes.

The lumen output labeled on LED-tubes is not the lumen output from the luminary. Typical LOR (Light Output Ratio) on MIR is 25% which means that only 75% of the light from LED-tubes passes through the diffuser. The lumen value from MIR LED-Kits is measured in “system lumen output” and is the lumen output from the luminary. In addition, the light distribution from MIR LED-Kits are designed around MIR to meet the marine norms for light evenness and glare, something that cannot be replicated with LED-tubes.
