Galley, laundry, storage, cold and freezer rooms

Galley

The galley kitchen on a passenger ferry or cruise ship is a workplace for both chefs and cleaners, which means the illuminance and uniformity levels of the installed lighting layout need to be quite high. High quality luminaires with the appropriate Ingress Protection (IP) rating are recommended in all hygienic areas of galleys and kitchens, where the strict requirements of USPH (United States Public Health) apply.

To withstand the intensive cleaning, lighting in a galley kitchen must have a high IP rating and should be made from chemical-resistant materials. High temperatures are often present in cooking areas. In addition to these requirements, the light fittings must be easy to install, maintenance-free and should provide sufficient illumination with an appropriate colour rendering (CRI).

Important factors to consider when selecting lighting solutions for galleys and kitchens:

  • Easy to clean.
  • Solid and robust.
  • Reduced power consumption (high energy efficiency).
  • Low ceiling heights (isolation and ventilation ducts, lower the height of the stainless steel ceilings).

Cold storage areas and freezing rooms

Lighting in cold storage, refrigeration areas and freezing rooms on a cruise ship should provide a safe working environment by achieving a specific level of light intensity, even at low temperatures, which can drop to as low as -40°C. It is therefore critical that the lighting solutions are carefully selected to operate reliably at these temperatures. Low power consumption is also required in order to minimize the cooling required due to the heat emitted from the lighting. As food is stored in cold and freezer rooms, the correct design of luminaire is critical to ensure easy cleaning and frequent washdowns that will help prevent contamination of food.

When using brushes, pipes and sometimes high-pressure cleaners, the luminaires in a cold room refrigeration system or freezer unit must have a high ingress protection (IP) rating to withstand these high pressures. We recommend the use of IP66/67 LED lighting in these areas.

Important factors to consider when choosing lighting solutions for cold storage areas and freezing rooms:

  • Easy to clean.
  • Solid and robust.
  • Low minimum ambient temperature class.
  • No maintenance and reduced power consumption (which means less cooling is required).

Laundry rooms

With their high humidity and potential for water ingress, laundry rooms on cruise ships require luminaires that are designed with a minimum ingress protection rating of IP44 and that withstand ambient temperatures up to +45°C.

As a result of the high demands placed on the quality and durability of its products, Glamox operates modern assessment and testing laboratories in Norway and Germany for the simulation of a wide variety of environmental conditions, including laundries.

Important factors to consider when choosing lighting solutions for laundry rooms:

  • IP rating (water ingress resistance).
  • Mechanical/impact resistance and a compact design.
  • Light quality.
  • No maintenance and reduced power consumption (high energy efficiency).

Storage rooms

A general storage room is often a huge area on a cruise ship or passenger ferry, where everything is handled and stored on shelves and racking. Space to install luminaires is normally limited and so the light fittings must be robust and solid in order to withstand accidental damage as the goods are moved in and out of this area.

Important factors to consider when choosing lighting solutions for ship storage rooms:

  • Different mounting options.
  • Mechanically robust and a compact design.
  • No maintenance and reduced power consumption (high energy efficiency).
