Light control for outdoor lighting

Outdoor lighting makes our streets and outdoor environments safer and more pleasant, but it is also a large energy consumer. If we turn off the light completely, people will feel unsecure. A good way to handle this challenge is to use dimmable LED lighting that will reduce energy consumption without compromising on safety.

For several of our outdoor products, Glamox can offer 2 different solutions.

Solution 1 is based on a standardized Zhaga socket described in book 18. There are 3 different versions available.

ZSU = Zhaga Socket Up is a solution where we have integrated a socket on top of the product where you can connect a communication or sensor module. This must be ordered separately.

ZSD = Zhaga Socket Down is a solution where we have integrated a socket on the underside of the product where you can connect a sensor module. This must be ordered separately.

ZSB = Zhaga Socket Both up and down. This is a solution where we have integrated a socket on both the top and the underside of the product where you can connect a communication or sensor module. These must be ordered separately.

Solution 2 is integrated into the LED driver in each individual luminaire. We call it Glamox NightDim, and we can supply 2 different preset modes.

Mode 1 (ND1)

Dimmed down 50% for 6 hours starting from centre point

The system must be controlled by either a timer or a twilight sensor. The NightDim calculates the light cycle’s centre point and dims the light down to 50 % in a period of 6 hours after the centre point.

Example 1

October

  • In October a street is illuminated for 14 hours, from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m.
  • The centre point is at 1 a.m. (14 hours divided by 2 equals 7 hours which places the centre point 7 hours after 6 p.m.).
  • Light will be turned on 100% at 6 p.m.
  • At 1 a.m. the lights are dimmed to 50%.
  • At 7 a.m. the lights are back to 100%.
  • At 8 a.m., the lights are turned off.

June

  • In June the same lights are burning for only 6 hours from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.
  • The centre point is at 1 a.m. (6 hours divided by 2 gives a centre point 3 hours after 10 p.m.)
  • At 10 p.m. the light will be turned on 100%.
  • A 1 a.m. the light will be dimmed to 50%
  • At 4:00 a.m. the light will be turned completely off.

Mode 2 (ND2)

Dimmed down 50% for 8 hours, starting 2 hours before centre point

The system must be controlled by either a timer or a twilight sensor. The NightDim calculates the light cycle’s centre point and dims the light down to 50% for a period of 8 hours starting 2 hours before the centre point.

Example 2

  • In October a street is illuminated for 14 hours, from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m.
  • The centre point is at 1 a.m. (14 hours divided by 2 gives a centre point at 7 hours after 6 p.m.).
  • The light will be turned on 100% at 6 p.m.
  • 2 hours before centre point (11:00 pm) the light will be dimmed down to 50%.
  • At 7 a.m. the lights are back to 100 %
  • At 8 a.m. the lights are turned off.
