The WEEE directive came into force in August 2005 and was implemented in the UK from July 2007 within statutory instrument SI 2006 No. 3289. The objective is to minimise landfill of waste electrical and electronic equipment by placing obligations upon users and producers to handle their waste more carefully and finance the collection and recycling/re-use of such equipment at end of life.
In order to comply with the WEEE directive all businesses must have joined a Compliance scheme by 15th March 2007. Glamox Luxonic has chosen to join the Electrolink compliance schemes who are experienced in waste management in both the B2C and B2B business sectors.

In order to limit the costs and risks that are passed to customers through the cost of the product we have decided to embrace Regulation 9 that provides two choices for our customers in the future when the luminaires eventually become waste.
1. The customer can choose to appropriately dispose of their waste, via their chosen waste contractor and may recover some scrap cost now and in later years as commodity values increase.
2. The customer can choose to contact Glamox Luxonic to arrange for unwanted luminaires to be collected. We will then make arrangements via our compliance scheme operator to take back the waste. We do however reserve the right to make a charge at that time as we did not make allowance for the charge at time of purchase.
In both cases we encourage our customers to provide Glamox Luxonic with information on the WEEE collected and recycled. This information is useful for Government analysis and required by the legislation.
Discharge lamps and Industrial emergency batteries.
These are classified as hazardous waste and have to be disposed of in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. These items are required to be separated from the waste luminaire product and disposed of separately in the appropriate manner.
Gas discharge lamps – There are free recycling collection points located throughout the UK.

As a producer of industrial batteries under the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009, Glamox Luxonic are a 'producer' of Ni-Cd and Ni-Mh industrial batteries and therefore are obliged to take back free of charge waste industrial batteries of the same chemistry type for treatment/recycling. We are required to do this in any calendar year we place new batteries of the same type on the market.
